Even the most standard instrument departures can be confusing at times-especially at unfamiliar airports. Add an obstacle-a tree near the end of field, a nearby TV tower, or a mountain along your departure path-and a simple instrument departure can get dangerously complex. As a pilot, it’s your job to anticipate and familiarize yourself with departure procedures (DP) and obstacle departure procedures (ODP) for any runway on the field.
