Jeppesen now offers several computer based training programs for the popular Garmin G1000 avionics suite. Available now is Jeppesen G1000 Training–Core Functions and VFR Procedures, and Jeppesen CFI Toolset — G1000 Visual Tools. Available in May will be Jeppesen G1000 Training–IFR Procedures.

Jeppesen G1000 Training–Core Functions and VFR Procedures is an extensive program developed with input from Garmin that teaches the skills required to master and confidently fly the G1000. The Jeppesen scenario-based, guided simulation system provides comprehensive initial and recurrent knowledge of all core functions and tasks required for VFR flight, and greatly facilitates the transition to flying the Garmin glass cockpit. This program includes over 60 topics and is priced at $259.95.

Jeppesen G1000 Training–IFR Procedures will focus more on advanced functionality and procedures used when flying IFR. The topics build on the core skills learned in the VFR version and create confidence and expanded comprehension of sophisticated IFR operations. Jeppesen G1000 Training–IFR Procedures is priced at $229.95.

Jeppesen CFI Toolset–G1000 Visual Tools is a Computer Aided Instructional (CAI) application used by both CFIs and students, and is very useful when teaching pilots transitioning from “steam gauge” cockpits to the Garmin glass flight deck. It is designed to help flight instructors visually convey to students key concepts about the G1000 Primary Flight Display (PFD) and navigation principles. Price is $99.95.

All of Jeppesen’s avionics training programs use a multi-step, proven method to teach procedures: first, the demo mode plays an animated, narrated “movie” to illustrate the selected topic. A scenario is featured in the demo to make the training realistic and effective. Next, the interactive modes prompt users through the same scenario and task that was previously demonstrated, supported with on-screen text to help guide students through the correct actions. A solo mode (available in most programs) provides assessment and reinforces knowledge by allowing students to perform the task, but without any on-screen prompting. Students receive immediate feedback for any incorrect actions and a help system is available if needed.

This scenario-based, guided simulation training system helps pilots get the most from their avionics and allows them to train and learn in the right environment –on the ground. The effective use of these training programs increases flight safety by minimizing “heads down” time, often incurred when pilots are unfamiliar with their avionics systems. While excellent for initial training use, the programs are also valuable re-current learning courses that address the highly perishable skills issues that develop with infrequent use of complicated aircraft electronic systems.
